Exploring British Museums
Explore the world-class museums of London, England with Dr. Marjorie Och of the Department of Art & Art History. Visit some destinations as a group, and choose others to explore on your own, exact itinerary will depend on student participants’ interests.
- Explore the remarkable British Museum, which was founded in 1753 and features a collection of over 8 million items.
- Experience the Victoria and Albert Museum, the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design, housing a permanent collection of over 4.5 million objects.
- See the world-famous crown jewels and meet the Beefeaters at the Tower of London, the city’s historic fortress on the Thames.
- Stroll through London’s breathtaking palaces and treat yourself to the sights of Westminster Abbey.

International travel may require immunizations or preventative medicines. Please refer to the US Center for Disease Control’s Traveler’s Health Information Page for recommendations. The UMW Health Center provides free travel consultations by appointment, as well as travel information for UMW students. The Center for International Education recommends that each student have a personalized medical consultation prior to international travel.
This program includes significant amounts of walking each day and standing time in exhibits.
Accommodations
In London, students will stay in double-occupancy rooms at the Lancaster Gate Hotel. Breakfast is included.
The Lancaster Gate Hotel is just a two minute walk from Hyde Park. A quick walk through Hyde Park brings you to the Royal Albert Hall or through to the shopping haven that is Oxford Street. The hotel is situated between Lancaster Gate and Queensway underground stations and next to Paddington mainland station.
Coursework
Students will earn 1 credit for IDIS 350S. The course focuses on:
- Examining contemporary issues and practices in London’s museums, including the history of collections, current collecting policies, methods of interpretation, exhibition spaces, audiences and communities, institutional purpose, planning for disaster, and building a future.
- Classes and lectures held on-site at museums, historic homes, and contemporary art galleries. Some discussions will also be held at the hotel prior to site visits and in the evening at group dinners.
Class will meet daily for 5-10 hours during the trip. Students will complete required readings in addition to completing an on-site report and reflective paper. This course satisfies the Beyond the Classroom OR Diverse and Global Perspectives general education requirement by contract with the Faculty Director only.
Requirements & Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course. Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in order to participate. This program is open to all UMW students regardless of major or year of study.

Payment

Online payees have the choice of either credit card or eCheck (ACH) payment. ACH transactions will be charged a flat fee of $0.50 per transaction. All credit card payments will incur a 2.85% service fee. For credit card payments, a minimum convenience fee of $3.00 will be applied to transactions over $20.00 and under $106.00.
