For the same UMW tuition you paid this semester, you could study as an exchange student in France!

Program Overview

Located in Paris, the Mission Interuniversitaire de Coordination des Exchanges Franco-Américains (MICEFA) is UMW’s gateway to French universities. Students select from public universities in Paris according to their academic needs. Member institutions include: La Sorbonne, La Sorbonne Nouvelle, René Descartes, Pierre et Marie Curie, Denis Diderot, Saint Denis, Dauphine, Nanterre, Sud, Val de Marne, Nord, Val d’Essonne, Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Universite de Marne Vallee, or Institut Catholique de Paris. Select campuses offer specific fields such as the humanities, social sciences, pre-law and more. For more information, visit www.micefa.org.

Academics

  • Available for spring or fall semester, or the academic year
  • No language requirement
  • GPA requirement: 2.5 or greater
  • Must have completed at least one year of study at UMW
  • Students can earn 12-18 credits per semester.
  • All courses must be pre-approved by a UMW department chair. Elective credits may be approved by the Center for International Education. Students must receive a “C” or better for courses to transfer.

Housing and Meals

The MICEFA arrival package includes a ten-day hostel stay for orientation, during which you will learn your way around Paris and find a housing option that suits your needs and budget. The MICEFA staff will guide you through the selection process and make sure you find a suitable long-term option.  The housing search should be seen as an opportunity to explore Paris and its excellent transportation system.  Although Craig’s List and Air B & B are popular tools for finding rental options, MICEFA does NOT recommend you rent an apartment sight unseen from a stranger.  These tools can be used to start your research before arrival, but please wait until your MICEFA orientation to sign a lease. Cost estimates and further information can be found by visiting www.micefa.org.

Excursions

MICEFA sponsors extracurricular excursions on the weekends. Examples of previous excursions include: a visit to the Mont St. Michel in Brittany, a day trip to Auvers sur Oise where Van Gogh is buried, an exploration of the magnificent castles of the Loire Valley, and a stroll through Monet’s gardens at Giverny. Personal travel can be arranged on weekends and during university breaks in late September and early April.
