Health Information

International travel may require immunizations or preventative medicines. Please refer to the US Center for Disease Control’s Traveler’s Health Information Page for recommendations. The UMW Health Center provides free travel consultations by appointment, as well as travel information for UMW students. The Center for International Education recommends that each student have a personalized medical consultation prior to international travel.

This program includes moderate hiking through uneven terrain and significant walking.

Take a break from winter, and explore Australian culture during summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Study marketing in Australia with Dr. Lance Gentry and Dr. Alex Dunn and spend just under two weeks immersed in Aussie culture.   Enjoy the unique feel of Melbourne, capital of the Australian state of Victoria and second largest city in Australia.  Visit scenic locations and gain a first-hand appreciation of the benefits of eco-tourism.  And of course, there will be opportunities to see Australian critters such as kangaroos, koalas, emus, and wombats.

  • Be the first to ring in the New Year in Australia (a half-day before your friends and family).
  • See the penguins on Phillips Island.
  • Meet with Australians to discuss sustainable land and water management practices that balance economics and ecology.
  • Learn and discuss the challenges of ethically marketing dolphins and seals to tourists (and hopefully swim with them during our visit).
  • See Clydesdale horses at work as we travel back in time and visit an authentic 1850’s gold mining town (Ballarat).

Accommodations

Students will stay in comfortable local hotels or college rooms. Wifi access is included (with the possible exception of a few nights).  Students will have the opportunity to stock up at a local supermarket for inexpensive breakfasts.  The cost of the trip includes one group meal per day (lunch or supper depending on the day) and students will be individually responsible for the other meal.

Coursework

In addition to the program travel during Winter Break, students will enroll in the Fall 2023 course MKTG 370 for 3 credits.  The course will meet weekly for the last 8 weeks of the Fall 2023 semester in preparation for the trip to Australia.

This course satisfies both the Beyond the Classroom and Diverse and Global Perspectives general education requirements.

Requirements & Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course. Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in order to participate. This program is open to all UMW students regardless of major or year of study. It is also open to non-UMW students but enrollment in MKTG 370 for the Fall 2023 semester is required. Dr. Gentry will give you permission to enroll in the class if you meet the requirements once you have registered for the trip.

Scholarships

Faculty-Led Program Scholarships are available to UMW students (deadlines apply).
