Health Information

International travel may require immunizations or preventative medicines. Please refer to the US Center for Disease Control’s Traveler’s Health Information Page for recommendations. The Center for International Education recommends that each student have a personalized medical consultation prior to international travel.

This program includes moderate hiking through uneven terrain and significant walking.

Take a break from winter, and explore Australian culture during summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Study marketing in Australia with Dr. Lance Gentry and spend just under two weeks immersed in Aussie culture.  See one of the most isolated developed cities in the world and understand why Western Australians are known as Sandgropers.  Visit scenic locations and gain a first-hand appreciation of the benefits of eco-tourism.  And of course, there will be opportunities to see Australian critters such as kangaroos,  koalas, and quokkas.

  • Be the first to ring in the New Year in Perth
  • See the quokkas on Rottnest Island
  • Learn and discuss the challenges of ethically marketing dolphins to tourists (and hopefully see the dolphins at the same time).
  • See if you can make a boomerang come back to you
  • Visit one of Australia’s largest working gold mines and learn how raw ore is transformed into gold

Students will stay in comfortable local hotels or college rooms. Wifi access is included (with the possible exception of two nights).  Students will have the opportunity to stock up at a local supermarket for inexpensive breakfasts.  The cost of the trip includes one group meal per day (lunch or supper depending on the day) and students will be individually responsible for the other meal.

In addition to the program travel during Winter Break, students will enroll in the Fall 2018 course MKTG 472A for 3 credits.  The course will meet weekly for the last 8 weeks of the fall semester in preparation for the trip to Australia.

This course satisfies the Experiential Learning OR Global Inquiry general education requirement by contract with the faculty director only.

Requirements & Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course. Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in order to participate. This program is open to all UMW students regardless of major or year of study. It is also open to non-UMW students but enrollment in MKTG 472A for the Fall 2018 semester is required. Dr. Gentry will give you permission to enroll in the class if you meet the requirements once you have registered for the trip.

Faculty-Led Program Scholarships are available to UMW students (deadlines apply).
