You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.
Some UMW Faculty-Led study abroad opportunities are strongly service-oriented or include a community service element. View the program pages for more information.
Additionally, there are excellent online resources for independently researching volunteer opportunities abroad. Some programs offer academic credit. CIE recommends:
- Think Impact
- International Volunteer HQ
- Cultural Embrace by API
- Global Volunteers
- Volunteer Match
- Go Volunteer Abroad (Scholarships available)
A volunteer experience abroad can be used to satisfy either the Experiential Learning or Global Inquiry General Education requirement via a completed General Education Contract. Once the contract is submitted, UMW course SAGE 000 will appear on the course schedule for the first semester back on campus, and EL or GI reflective component will be graded at the end of that semester. To utilize the General Education Contract, students must log in to myUMW and the register to volunteer abroad via the Education Abroad Registration Portal.
If comprehensive international health insurance is not provided by the volunteer program, students are required to enroll in CIE’s policy for the time spent abroad. In addition to the health insurance fee, if students are seeking academic credit they are also responsible for a study abroad fee ($300 per semester or $20 per week for short-term programs). Both of these expenses can be billed to your student account.
Students must attend a Pre-Departure orientation prior to travel – contact CIE for date and time. For more information, please contact CIE or visit our office in Lee Hall, Suite 434.
