UMW Faculty-Led Programs

UMW Faculty-Led Programs are tied to disciplines offered at UMW. Students may earn either UMW credit or transfer credit, depending on the program. UMW faculty offer exciting summer, spring, and winter break programs that vary in length from one week to six-weeks. Program options change from year to year.  To learn more about individual UMW Faculty-Led Programs, students are encouraged to contact the program faculty director. Non-UMW students are also welcome to participate in most programs.  Faculty-Led Program Scholarships are available to UMW students (deadlines apply.)

To register to study abroad, simply log in to EagleNet, click on “My University Resources”, click on the “Academics” tab, select “Education Abroad”, and follow the prompts for the program of your choice.

Payments for faculty-led study abroad programs can be made by cash or check only. Remit checks made payable to UMW, with student name and program in the memo line, to the Cashier’s Office located on the second floor of Lee Hall, or mail to:

UMW in Cambodia “Cambodian Field Study” (Geography) – PROGRAM FULL for Winter Break 2012-13

Professor Donald Rallis will lead a group of students to explore the culture and heritage of Cambodia with visits to Phnom Pehn, Sihanoukville, and the famous Angkor Wat, plus a home-stay on a rice farm. Small group size allows for significant cultural immersion during this three week course that takes place over winter break. Program dates are December 12, 2012 to January 9, 2013. UMW in Guatemala “Grass-Roots Development” (Geography) – PROGRAM FULL for Spring Break 2013

The focus of this spring break trip is community cloud forest conservation, ecological understanding,  traditional Maya ecological practices, and innovative agro-ecological techniques. These initiatives can address social needs, create economic opportunity, and build food security. Led by Dr. Dawn Bowen, students will spend two nights spent with Q’eqchi’ Maya host families and one night with young Q’eqchi’ women who are recipients of agro-ecology scholarships at a new agro-ecology center. Students will earn three UMW credit hours in Geograhpy. Registration for this program will begin soon. UMW in Québec “Montréal and Québec City” (French) – PROGRAM FULL for Spring Break 2013

Spend Spring Break touring the Great White North with Dr. Scott Powers. Students will enhance their French language skills while earning Experiential Learing credit. This program visits two of Canada’s principle cities, including guided tours of Montréal and Québec City, a Québécios cooking class, museums, botanical garden, a school/business visit, gondola ride at Montmorency Falls, and entry to a play, a movie, and a lecture all in French. This program fulfills the Undergraduate Experiential Learning Requirement by contract with the faculty director. UMW in Scotland/Ireland “International Study Tour Dublin & Edinburgh” (Business) – PROGRAM FULL for Spring Break 2013

Travel to Edinburgh and Dublin with Dr. Ken Machande of UMW’s College of Business, and meet with executive-level leaders. Tours in Ireland include a sightseeing tour of Dublin and Trinity College, in depth exploration of the famed Guiness brewery, and a day trip to the fishing village of Howth and the spectacular east coast of Ireland.  After a short flight to Edinburgh, experience a sightseeing tour of the city from Holyrood House to Princes Street to the Royal Mile, ending with a visit to the Royal Yacht Brittania.  Explore the medieval city of Stirling and historic Stirling Castle. In addition, visit Scottish and Irish businesses to learn how they operate, as well as similarities and differences in comparison to US enterprises.  This program fulfills the Undergraduate Experiential Learning Requirement by contract with the faculty director. UMW in Belize “Tropical Ecology” (Biology) – PROGRAM FULL for Spring Break 2013

Travel to Belize with Dr. Stephen Fuller on during Spring Break, March 2-10, 2013.  Tour central Belize, visiting the Crooked Tree Bird Sanctuary and Belize Zoo, with a canoe tour down the Macal River.  Cross the border into Guatemala to visit the Tikal Mayan Ruins, then travel back into Belize to experience the Blue Hole National Park. End the program on a high note with snorkeling on the barrier reef in Tobacco Caye. Students will enroll in the Spring 2013 course BIOL 424 Tropical Ecology, prerequisite BIOL 210 General Ecology. UMW in Germany “Holocaust Memory” (Interdisciplinary) – PROGRAM FULL for Spring Break 2013

Spend your spring break in Deutschland, guided by Dr. Marcel Rotter of UMW’s German Program. Take a walking tour of historic Berlin landmarks. Join a private guide for a tour of the Holocuast Memorial Site. Learn more about the dark side of Germany’s history by visiting a former concentration camp at Museum Sachsenhausen. Visit the Reichstag building and the Jewish Museum. Walk through the site known as the “Topography of Terror,” the central location from which the Nazis planned and managed most of their crimes. Tour the site of the notorious Wannsee Conference where a group of high‐ranking Nazi officials met to organize and implement the “Final Solution to the Jewish Question”. Travel by train to Potsdam and enjoy a private guided tour of the Schloss Sanssouci and its park. Students will receive 2 UMW credits for IDIS 350M. UMW in Bath, England “In the Steps of Tolkien and Lewis” (English) – PROGRAM FULL for Summer 2013

Dr. Warren Rochelle teaches a seminar during this program offered by Advanced Studies in England, located in the historic town of Bath (an hour and a half’s train ride from London). With field trips to Stonehenge, Oxford, and Birmingham, students really will walk in the footsteps of these two literary giants. In addition to Dr. Rochelle’s “Tolkien, Lewis, and Anglo-American Fantasy” course, students will round out their summer study schedules with either “Triumph of Georgian Bath” or “Jane Austen in Bath.”  This five-week program runs from June 8 to July 13. UMW in Bilbao, Spain “Spain for All” (Spanish & IDIS) – Summer 2013

Dr. Jose Sainz leads this program at the Universidad de Deusto in Bilbao, a bustling, friendly, and beautiful city in the Basque country on the coast of northern Spain. The University of Deusto is located in the heart of the city, offering students a unique experience focusing on either an Intensive Spanish Course or interdisciplinary studies programs in a variety of subjects. The program runs for four and a half weeks during the summer, including the opportunity to visit some of Spain’s most beautiful cities and attend cultural events, including the world-famous Running of the Bulls in Pamplona. UMW in France “Discovering Paris” (French) – PROGRAM FULL for Summer 2013

Spend a month in Paris, France’s famed capital city, under the instruction of Dr. Brooke Di Lauro. Study French at the Institut Catholique, where small class size allows for an intensive study of the language. In addition, Dr. Di Lauro’s culture class will visit the Louvre, Giverny, and other Parisian landmarks. Exposure to French newspapers, popular music and films will provide substantial practice with oral communication. Students may earn up to six transfer credits. Brochure, Request Information

   

UMW in France “Preservation Abroad” (Historic Preservation) – PROGRAM FULL for Summer 2013

Dr. Andrea Livi-Smith, a Paris native, leads this program focused on the urban and architectural history of Paris, as well as its preservation. Taught in English, this course will crisscross Paris to discover its history from the maze-like streets of the middle ages to the City of Lights as we know it today. Extensive site visits will be the centerpiece of this three credit course, with a bonus excursion to Brussels, Belguim. An additional three credits in French at the Institut Catholique, or Individual Studies under Dr. Smith, are optional. Brochure, Request Information

    

UMW in Italy (Italian/Art History) – PROGRAM FULL for Summer 2013

Spend a month living like an Italian in Orvieto, Italy and earn Italian Language or Art History credit. Led by Dr. Federico Schneider, this full-immersion, intensive language experience integrates classes taught by resident faculty of the Instituto di Lingua e Cultura: Lingua Si and by Dr. Schneider. Students will visit Italy’s medieval “Dying City,” Civita Bagnoregio, as well as Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis. Optional travel to the Lake of Bolsena, Rome, and Florence, all of which are easily accessible from Orvieto. UMW in Tanzania “Leadership Development” (Business) – PROGRAM FULL for Summer 2013

During this sixteen day program in Africa, students will develop leadership and cross-cultural relations skills. The program includes an introduction to Tanzanian culture and crash course in Swahili, a full-day visit to a Maasai village, volunteering at a school for orphans, home visits with local families, meetings with village elders, a visit with an HIV widows group to learn about their small business enterprise, and a three day Serengetti National Park excursion with sunrise game drives and a visit to Ngorongoro Crater. UMW Psychology in Europe (IDIS) – PROGRAM FULL for Summer 2013

Dr. Denis Nissim-Sabat leads this two-week program during the month of May, featuring stops in London, Paris, Wurzburg, and Vienna to trace the development of psychology prior to its introduction in the United States. Students will grow to appreciate the distinct European cultures and the influence they have had upon the global development of psychology. This three-credit interdisciplinary studies course offers students the opportunity to tour the home of Charles Darwin, the Centre for the History of Psychology, and Sigmund Freud’s London Clinic. UMW Programs for 2014

UMW in Ecuador “Sustainability in the Galapagos” (Biology) – Spring Break 2014

Join Dr. Andrew Dolby and Dr. Melanie Szulczewski for Spring Break among the fascinating flora and fauna of the Galapagos Islands. Learn why this unique archipelago remains one of the world’s foremost living biological laboratories and models of conservation biology. Highlights include a tour of the Charles Darwin scientific station and giant tortoise conservation center, a reforestation service learning project, and a hiking trip on the 2nd largest active volcano in the world. Enjoy dramatic, close-up encounters with sea lions, birds, sea turtles, and tropical fish, and an excursion to Tintoreras Islet to spot Galapagos penguins and white-tipped reef sharks. Also included is a bird watching trip in the cloud forest of mainland Ecuador, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. Students will receive three course credits for either EESC 421 or BIOL 471. Course content will focus on the natural history of the Galapagos and the policy and strategy governing their preservation.  Brochure, Request Information

UMW in Italy & Croatia “Exploring the Roman and Venetian Empires” (Classics and Art History) – Summer 2014

During this two week program in May/June, 2014, students will spend one week in Venice, with day trips to the surrounding region, and one week in Croatia. While in N. Italy, experience the art and architecture of Venice, seat of the Venetian Empire; explore the Veneto, including Verona and Padua, abounding in Roman, Medieval, and Palladian architecture; spend evenings strolling along the pathways and canals of Venice, a stunning view around each turn. Week two will be spent in Croatia, with a new stop every night: travel along the Adriatic’s fabulous Dalmatian Coast, rich in history and natural beauty; and see the Temple of Rome and Augustus at Pula and Diocletian’s retirement palace at Split. This three-credit course may be taken as Art History 450 or Classics 351, with option for additional independent study credit in the Fall 2014 semester. UMW in Cuba “Urban Planning Abroad” (Geography) – Spring Break 2014

Led by Professor Jeffrey Walker, hit the ground running following our evening arrival in Habana Vieja (old Havana) and dinner at the hotel, with a lively and colorful outdoor performance of “Opera de la Calle.”  Discuss development with Cuban planners and architects, and Havana’s ongoing restoration, historic preservation and city Master Plan, in meetings with representatives from the Office of the Historian.  Take a ferry across Havana Bay for a visit to the Church of the Virgen de Regla, patron saint of sailors and Catholic counterpart to Yemayá, the African goddess of the sea in the Yoruba religion..  Explore sustainable agriculture practices with workers at Vivero Organoponico Alamar (Alamar urban farm), and tour Viñales Valley, a rich outlying agricultural area known for its stunning views and mogotes, or rock-like formations and cliffs.  Attend a Comité de Defensa de la Revolución (CDR) meeting.  Take in the innovative designs of Cuba’s Escuelas Nacionales de Arte (National Schools of Art), and other distinctive architecture in and around UNESCO World Heritage Site Havana, and the villages of Cienfuegos and Trinidad.  Brochure, Request Information
