UMW Theatre in London
In this 3-week experience, students will witness and reflect upon world-class theatre productions in London, England. Along with Faculty Leader Marc Williams, students will visit theatres and other significant arts and culture sites in London and endeavor to understand the role theatre has played—and continues to play—in shaping cultural identity in London and beyond.
- 12 Theatre performances at venues like The National Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, The Royal Court, and the Old Vic.
- Full day excursion to Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon and performance at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
- Tour and performance at Shakespeare’s Globe, a modern reconstruction of the original.
- Visits to significant cultural and historic sites such as Theatre Royal at Drury Lane, Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Hampton Court, The British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and St. Paul’s Cathedral
- City sightseeing tours (The Shard, London Eye, Covent Garden, Westminster, Southbank, Trafalgar Square)
- Free time to explore London.

Online payees have the choice of either credit card or eCheck (ACH) payment. ACH transactions will be charged a flat fee of $0.50 per transaction. All credit card payments will incur a 2.95% service fee. For credit card payments, a minimum convenience fee of $3.00 will be applied to transactions over $20.00 and under $102.00.
Students can avoid fees by paying in-person at the UMW Cashier’s office by cash or check (made out to “UMW”). The Cashier’s office is located on the 2nd floor of Lee Hall.
Students will earn 6 credits (THEA 451 AND 452) via transfer credit. All students will need to complete the CIE Study Abroad Course Approval form prior to departure which will facilitate the credit transfer process. Transcripts will be received from Lincoln University, the school of record for KEI (program partner).
Students will attend theatre productions and consider how each performance can be viewed as a simultaneous reflection of three societies: that of the playwright, the characters, and the audience. In addition to theatre attendance, class meetings and discussions will be held on site in places like Shakespeare’s Birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon, Theatre Royal at Drury Lane, or the theatre collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Site visits, readings, and assignments will place theatre performances in social and historical contexts that will deepen students’ engagement and prompt meaningful reflection.
UMW Theatre in London participants can also satisfy their Beyond the Classroom or Diverse and Global Perspectives general education requirement by contract with the Faculty Director.
Students will stay in hotel accommodations in London zones 1 or 2 in double occupancy rooms.
Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in order to participate. This program is open to all UMW students regardless of major though preference will be given to upperclass Theatre majors. As per UMW credit transfer policies, a C grade of above is required for courses taught abroad to transfer back to UMW. The program is also open to non-UMW students and UMW Alumni

Excluded in the program fee:
- Passport and/or visa fees
- Most lunches and dinners
- Souvenirs and other personal expenses
- Personal health costs (ex. vaccination fees, COVID-19 testing, etc.)
This program requires a moderate to high level of activity, including significant city walking, lengthy hours, and navigation of public transportation.
International travel may require immunizations or preventative medicines. Please refer to the US Center for Disease Control’s Traveler’s Health Information Page for recommendations. The UMW Health Center provides free travel consultations by appointment, as well as travel information for UMW students. The Center for International Education recommends that each student have a personalized medical consultation prior to international travel.
