UMW in Spain | Internships
Aimed towards students interested in a high-impact introduction to the business industry in a Spanish context, this program offers professional skill development and focuses on students interested in areas such as:

Spend up to 5 hours a day in a local company, where you will carry out tasks assigned by your company supervisor. The working environment of the company will be in Spanish. However, students may need to complete some tasks in English.
This internship program is run through the University of Deusto, in Bilbao, Spain.

Program Fee: €3,000 + Housing + $700 CIE Deposit (Estimated $7085 in total)*
Registration and $700 non-refundable deposit due to CIE: April 1, 2025
Final Balance will be invoiced directly to students based on accommodation selection
*Depends on housing option selected and exchange rate at time of billing.
NOTE: Three separate payments will be made to total the program fee.

- 3) Room & Board paid to housing provider (Vivir Bilbao) – students will be invoiced directly (Residence Hall = €52.80/day; Family Stay = €29/day)

Online payees have the choice of either credit card or eCheck (ACH) payment. ACH transactions will be charged a flat fee of $0.50 per transaction. All credit card payments will incur a 2.95% service fee. For credit card payments, a minimum convenience fee of $3.00 will be applied to transactions over $20.00 and under $102.00.
Students can avoid fees by paying in-person at the UMW Cashier’s office by cash or check (made out to “UMW”). The Cashier’s office is located on the 2nd floor of Lee Hall.
Students will earn up to 6 transfer credits for the 8-week internship. Placements will depend upon availability, and both the candidate’s statement of intention and academic background will be taken into consideration. Guarantees cannot be made for students to be placed in their preferred professional area as companies have the final say in terms of selection.
This internship satisfies the Beyond the Classroom General Education Requirement. Students can also satisfy the Diverse and Global Perspectives General Education Requirement by participating in this abroad experience, via academic contract with CIE.
Internship Structure
Students will be immersed in a cultural experience where they will be expected to gain professional self-awareness through observation, participation, and analysis of organizational activities through interaction with colleagues in a work environment related to their field.
The internship program has a three-part structure:
- Internship with a local Spanish Company
- Preparation and program organization provided by UD-CIDE
- University advising by the University of Deusto
The Spanish company in which the student is placed provides the structure of the internship portion of the program. The University of Deusto will provide an internship advisor who will assist students in making the most of their work experience within an academic framework. Each internship experience will be monitored through weekly meetings, a logbook, and a final report.
Program Goals

- Develop professional skills in the area of business.
- To become familiar with the dynamics of professional relations in the Spanish-speaking world.
- Interested students should register with UMW’s Center for International Education (CIE)
- Upon confirmation of receipt of CIE registration, students need to email the University of Deusto – CIDE (UD-CIDE), the internship coordinating office in Bilbao, at cide@deusto.es expressing interest in the internship program
- At this time, the CIE deposit of $700 should be made via the payment links found in the “Program Fee & Payment Information” section or at the UMW Cashier’s office (cash or check). Due April 1, 2025.
- UD-CIDE will respond with an agreement form containing application instructions and a credit card payment form
- All forms must be completed, scanned, and emailed back to UD-CIDE along with a copy of the student’s résumé and a one-page statement of intentions
- Students will be notified by email of their acceptance after review of their application documents

Students can choose to stay in the Universidad de Deusto co-ed dormitory, Colegio Mayor Deusto. The residence hall provides individual rooms with ensuite bathrooms, three daily meals, bed linens, towels, laundry facilities, a library, a study room, a TV room, a computer lab, and a gym. Free Wi-Fi is also available as is a 24/7 reception service. The cost for the Residence Hall option is €52.80/day
Students can also choose to stay with a host family who will provide three daily meals, a private room, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, etc. The cost for the Family stay option is €29/day.

This program is open to students from all majors. Students must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA in order to participate and have intermediate Spanish language skills (must have completed SPAN 201 & 202 or SPAN 205). As per UMW credit transfer policies, a grade of C or above is required for courses taught abroad to transfer back to UMW.

International travel may require immunizations or preventative medicines. Please refer to the US Center for Disease Control’s Traveler’s Health Information Page for recommendations. The UMW Health Center provides free travel consultations by appointment, as well as travel information for UMW students. The Center for International Education recommends that each student have a personalized medical consultation prior to international travel.
This program includes moderate amounts of walking each day.
