Course Registration for Education Abroad

Students must register with the Center for International Education for their education abroad program, in addition to applying to their program of choice directly. Your CIE education abroad registration will keep you enrolled at UMW for the term(s) spent abroad, allow you to be billed appropriately, and facilitate the processing and/or transferring of financial aid.

For UMW Faculty-Led Programs, you will work with your CIE advisor and/or Faculty Director to complete the course registration process for your specific program. For all other UMW Approved Programs, you will work directly with the host institution or provider to complete the course registration process.

Before applying to a UMW Approved Program, students must first register with CIE and attend an advising appointment with their Education Abroad Advisor. In the advising appointment, students will be educated on the next steps for their intended program and may ask any questions about the education abroad process.

Billing

Your bill will be posted to your UMW Student Account after you have registered for an education abroad program. The type of program you select will determine how you are billed and pay. Review the Types of Programs information for your chosen program. More information about billing is available on the Fees & Payment Information page.

Registering for Next Semester

If you are away for a semester, you will still be able to register yourself for your next semester at UMW while you are overseas and enroll in courses through Banner as you would normally.

  • Shortly before course enrollment begins (late October for spring semester; mid-March for the fall semester), you will be able to log into Banner to see your enrollment appointment, the date and time on which you can begin course enrollment.
  • The Registrar’s Office will ensure that you are not given an Advisor Hold, but you will need to clear any and all other holds that you may have on your record.
  • Appointment times are assigned randomly by academic year; your time will not be impacted because you are abroad.

If your appointment time is particularly inconvenient because of the international time difference or lack of access to the internet, you may send a list of your desired courses to your Education Abroad Advisor, who will coordinate to enroll you in your desired courses at the appropriate time. You should include a list of possible alternate courses.

Transcripts

The courses and credits you earn abroad will appear on your UMW transcript in a different way if you have participated in a program for UMW Credits or Transfer credits.

UMW Credit Program: The courses will appear on your transcript once your registration is complete in Banner. Grades and credits you earned will appear on your transcript once the program’s Faculty Director has entered grades into Banner after the program has ended.

Transfer Credit Program: The credits you earned abroad will appear once CIE receives an official transcript from your host institution. Please be patient as this process can take several weeks to months after your program has ended. Students must earn a minimum grade of C or better for credits to transfer back to UMW and these grades do not affect your UMW GPA.
