UMW Advanced Studies in England
Along with Dr. Chris Foss of the Department of English and Linguistics, spend your summer in the beautiful World Heritage city of Bath! Participate in the summer program offered by Advanced Studies in England (ASE). The program, which may be of special interest to students of English, Cinema, Creative Writing, History, Education, Pre-Law, Studio Art or Theatre, also includes a three-day trip to the Dorset coast other travel in England.
- Live within easy walking distance of the first-century Roman Baths, the fourteenth-century Abbey, the Theatre Royal, art galleries, and museums.
- Explore Bath’s pubs, bakeries, and cafes, including the famous Pump Rooms, which tempt the bold with a taste of the Bath Waters.
- Relax by the River Avon or in the luxurious Bath Spa while in “Jane Austen’s City.”
- Explore ancient Stonehenge, mystical Glastonbury, and stately Oxford.

International travel may require immunizations or preventative medicines. Please refer to the US Center for Disease Control’s Traveler’s Health Information Page for recommendations. The UMW Health Center provides free travel consultations by appointment, as well as travel information for UMW students. The Center for International Education recommends that each student have a personalized medical consultation prior to international travel.
This program requires light to moderate levels of activity, with walking and optional hiking as part of the program.
Accommodations
Students will be housed in historic properties throughout the city center. Equipped with full kitchens, accommodations are nestled within walking distance of remarkable tourist sites, cosmopolitan shopping, and grocery stores. ASE student residences are chosen specifically to give students the feeling of being part of a local neighborhood; each fosters a sense of British life.
Coursework
Students will earn 8 transfer credits for two 4-credit courses of their choice. ASE is associated with University College, Oxford; many of the British faculty are from Oxford University. Classes are held in the Georgian town homes formally occupied by Lord Admiral Nelson, now equipped with a common room, library, and technology. Students will choose one core course from ASE’s summer offerings (taught by U.K. faculty) and one seminar (taught by U.S. professors).

Theatre Summer School (additional $200 program fee)
As an alternative to the above course offerings, students may choose to participate in Theatre Summer School under the instruction of Dustyn Martincich, Professor of Theatre and Dance, Bucknell University. Those who take part in Theatre Summer School will enroll in the following two courses:

The ASE Application is due by February 15, 2024. Admissions are rolling. This course satisfies the Beyond the Classroom or Diverse and Global Perspectives general education requirement by contract with the Faculty Director only.
Requirements & Prerequisites
ASE requires a minimum 3.0 GPA but will consider applicants with a 2.5 or higher GPA with two strong letters of recommendation. This program is open to all UMW students regardless of major or year of study, but preference is given to students who have completed their sophomore year. There are no specific prerequisites for this program.

Online payees have the choice of either credit card or eCheck (ACH) payment. ACH transactions will be charged a flat fee of $0.50 per transaction. All credit card payments will incur a 2.85% service fee. For credit card payments, a minimum convenience fee of $3.00 will be applied to transactions over $20.00 and under $106.00.
Payments can also be made in-person via cash or check (made out to “UMW”) at the UMW Cashiers Office located on the second floor of Lee Hall. No fees apply with this payment method.
