UMW Education Abroad Scholarships
The Center for International Education (CIE) administers 18 scholarships for students studying abroad, listed below. In addition, we have also listed other UMW study abroad scholarships administered by different departments on campus. Please contact the appropriate administrating department for information on their deadlines and how to apply.
For CIE-administered scholarships, apply via the Office of Financial Aid’s Online Scholarship Manager by clicking “Apply Now” below. When you complete the Study Abroad section on the scholarship search form, you will automatically be considered for all scholarships that apply to you.
Students must register to study abroad in order to be considered for a UMW Education Abroad Scholarship administered by CIE.
- For students studying abroad in the winter break or spring term, the application is open from October 1st – 20th. Awards will be announced in late November.
- For students studying abroad in the summer term, the application is open from February 1st – 20th. Awards will be announced in late March.
- For students studying abroad in the fall term, the application is open from April 1st – 20th. Awards will be announced in late May.

Abbott International Study Scholarship | $3,600 | This scholarship is awarded to eligible students planning to study abroad in a country in which English is not the official language. Priority is given to those majoring in a foreign language or who plan to teach a foreign language at the K-12 level. Study programs limited to the summer term only are not eligible. Amelia Elizabeth Davis International Study Scholarship | Amount varies by year | This scholarship is awarded to eligible students planning to study abroad in a country in which English is not the official language. Priority is given to students currently studying a foreign language. Both semester/year abroad and short-term Faculty-led programs are eligible.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
Barbara Alden International Scholarship | $4,000-$8,000 | This scholarship is awarded each year to outstanding undergraduate students. Recipients of this scholarship must plan to study abroad and have completed a minimum of 36 graded credit hours. Study programs limited to the summer term only are not eligible.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
Carlos and Carol Muldoon Martel ’68 Scholarship for International Studies | $1,900 | Awarded each year to an undergraduate student with demonstrated financial need and an intent to pursue study abroad as part of an academic program. Recipients must have completed at least three full semesters with a minimum of 36 graded credit hours, cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above and must complete their baccalaureate degree at UMW. The scholarship shall be awarded for not more than one year, and not less than one semester. study programs limited to the summer term are not eligible for consideration. Special consideration shall be given to students whose study abroad plans include a strong focus on language studies.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
Constance Booth Logothetis ’61 Study Abroad Scholarship | Amount varies by year | This scholarship is awarded to students with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study abroad. Special consideration is given to students whose study abroad plans include a focus on language studies. Both semester/year and Faculty-led programs are eligible.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
Donna Cannon Julian ’69 Endowment for International Studies | $1,500 | Students eligible to participate in an approved study abroad program, preferably in France qualify for this scholarship. Special consideration is given to students with demonstrated financial need. The scholarship may be used for tuition as well as other costs associated with the study abroad program including, but not limited to travel, textbooks, fees, etc.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
Effie S. Robinson ’45 Study Abroad Scholarship | Amount varies by year | This scholarship supports students who are pursuing a study abroad program. Both semester/year and short-term Faculty-led programs are eligible.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
Grace Cutler Hamilton Scholarship for French Study | $1,070 | The scholarship is awarded to students who participate in a UMW approved study abroad program in France and open to any student who is interested in furthering their facility in French and experiencing French culture. Special consideration is given to students with demonstrated financial need.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
Grellet C. Simpson International Scholarship | $4,000-$8,000 | This scholarship is awarded each year to outstanding undergraduate students who wishes to pursue study abroad as part of his/her academic training. Recipients must have completed at least three full semesters with a minimum of 36 graded credit hours and intend to complete their baccalaureate degree at UMW. The scholarship will be awarded for not more than one year, and not less than one semester. Jennifer Sharp-Warthan ’81 Study Abroad Scholarship | $1,100 | This scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student with preference to a student with a declared major in a science discipline (biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, etc.) or to a student whose study abroad plans include a strong focus in science.Administered by the Center for International Education |
John and Helen Hindinger Study Abroad Scholarship | Amount varies by year | This scholarship is awarded to students going abroad, with preference given to students whose study abroad plans include an art history component.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
John C. and Jerri Barden Perkins ’61 Study Abroad Scholarship | $1,300 | The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need and the intent to pursue study abroad as part of their academic training. Special consideration given to students whose plans include language study. Students must be going abroad for a semester or year.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
Kathy Liggett Leis ’69 Scholarship for French Study | $2,000 | This scholarship is awarded to students eligible to participate in a UMW approved study abroad program in France. This scholarship is not limited to French majors and is open to any student who is interested in furthering their facility in French and experiencing French culture. The recipient shall be in good academic standing and shall be selected on the basis of merit. Special consideration shall be given to students with demonstrated financial need.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
Lucille Cutchin Winton ’42 Study Abroad Scholarship | $2,500 | This scholarship is awarded to eligible students planning to study abroad in a country in which English is not the official language. Priority is given to students whose study abroad plans include a strong focus on language studies. In addition to semester/year abroad programs, short-term faculty-led international education abroad experiences are allowed.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
Malcolm and Carole S. Einarsen Alfriend ’69 Study Abroad Scholarship | $1,000 | Recipients shall be undergraduate students in good academic standing who are eligible for a UMW-approved study abroad program. Special consideration shall be given to students who wish to study in Ireland or Norway, especially the study of Irish or Norwegian culture or genealogy. In addition to semester/year abroad programs, short-term faculty-led international education abroad experiences are allowed.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
Ralph J. and Karen Laino Giannuzzi ’71 International Study Scholarship | TBD | This scholarship is awarded to eligible students planning to study abroad in a country in which English is not the official language; at least one class must be conducted in the target language. Priority is given to those majoring in a foreign language and who plan to work in careers that will enhance their knowledge of the language/languages particularly in the area of Foreign Policy. The scholarship will be awarded for not more than one year, and not less than one semester. Study programs limited to the summer term are eligible for consideration if the student(s) will be returning to campus for at least one semester.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
Richard P. Palmieri Memorial Scholarship | $3,000 | The scholarship aids students with financial need who wish to participate in a study abroad program in Italy. Applicants must provide letters of recommendation from two professors. The letters of recommendation should include a statement regarding the student’s commitment to making the most out of a study abroad opportunity.Administered by the Center for International Education. |
UMW Faculty-Led Program Education Abroad Scholarship | $500 for programs up to 15 days$1,000 for programs over 15 days | Available to students participating in a UMW Faculty-Led Education Abroad program. Virginia Lucas Shearin ’64 Study Abroad Scholarship | $1,000 | This scholarship is awarded to students who are planning to study abroad in a UMW-approved program including both semester/year-long programs and short-term faculty-led trips. The average award budget is $1,000. Individual award amounts may vary.Administered by the Center for the International Education. |

Rosalie Chauncey Memorial Scholarship in Studio Art | $14,500 | The scholarship provides studio art majors who show great potential for superior performance in painting and drawing the opportunity to study in Paris, France. The scholarship may be awarded for a semester, summer term, or both prior to the student’s senior year.Administered by the Art Department. |
Dr. Pauline Grace King ’37 Study Abroad Scholarship in Art History | $2,300 | This scholarship supports international study in art history. Students need not be an art history major, but must demonstrate strong interest in the field. Semester, yearlong, short-term, and summer programs are eligible. Junior and first semester senior recipients are required to present a 15-20 minute talk to the Department of Art and Art History during the semester following their return. Seniors who are abroad during the final semester are also encouraged to present.Administered by the Art History Department. |
Thyra Valade Conservation Leadership Scholarship | $2,500 | The scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding juniors or seniors with plans to pursue graduate studies and/or a career in wildlife or the field of conservation biology; preference is given to students pursuing avian conservation. Preference is given to students with a declared major in biology or environmental science. Awards may be used to either defray tuition or applied toward the cost of UMW approved internships, programs, or study abroad opportunities targeting avian study and/or conservation.Administered by the Biology Department. |
