Historic Preservation Abroad
Dr. Andrea Livi-Smith, a Paris native, leads this program focused on the urban and architectural history of Paris, as well as its preservation. Taught in English, this course will traverse Paris to discover its history from the maze-like streets of the middle ages to the City of Lights as we know it today. Extensive site visits will be the centerpiece of this course, with a bonus excursion to another international city outside of France. This program is offered in cooperation with Mission Interuniversitaire de Coordination des Échanges Franco-Americains (MICEFA).
- Experience daily excursions highlighting Paris’ history both ancient and modern.
- Explore the Paris waterfront and awe-inspiring Notre Dame cathedral.
- Tour the Père Lachaise cemetery and catacombs.
- Visit Montmatre, including Sacré Coeur Basilica and Place des Tertres.
- Experience full day-trips to the stunning Versailles Palace and gardens, in addition to the châteaux of the Loire Valley.

Online payees have the choice of either credit card or eCheck (ACH) payment. ACH transactions will be charged a flat fee of $0.50 per transaction. All credit card payments will incur a 2.95% service fee. For credit card payments, a minimum convenience fee of $3.00 will be applied to transactions over $20.00 and under $102.00.
Students can avoid fees by paying in-person at the UMW Cashier’s office by cash or check (made out to “UMW”). The Cashier’s office is located on the 2nd floor of Lee Hall.
Students will earn 3 transfer course credits for HISP 470: Historic Preservation Abroad.
The course is taught by Dr. Smith in cooperation with MICEFA. Students also have the option to participate in an independent study under Dr. Smith for an additional 1-3 credits. For additional course information, email Dr. Smith at alsmith@umw.edu.
HISP 470 fulfills the UMW Diverse and Global Perspectives general education requirement.
Students will stay in single dormitory rooms at Cité Universitaire, a ten-minute subway ride from the center of Paris. Kitchen facilities and student restaurants, laundry facilities, a computer lab, and internet access are available at the residence.
Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in order to participate. HISP 105 and 209 are recommended prerequisites but are not required. French proficiency is not required as course will be taught in English. As per UMW credit transfer policies, a grade of C or above is required for courses taught abroad to transfer back to UMW. This program is open to all UMW students regardless of major or year of study. It is also open to non-UMW students.

This program requires a moderate level of activity, including significant city walking.
International travel may require immunizations or preventative medicines. Please refer to the US Center for Disease Control’s Traveler’s Health Information Page for recommendations. The UMW Health Center provides free travel consultations by appointment, as well as travel information for UMW students. The Center for International Education recommends that each student have a personalized medical consultation prior to international travel.
