UMW in Spain

Summer 2027

Option 1: 3-week session: May 31 – July 22, 2027 (Arrival in Bilbao on June 1. Class begins June 2 and ends June 17 where the early arrival group will go to Madrid to join the rest of the students on the 5-week program, if applicable)

Option 2: 5-week session: June 17 – July 22, 2027 (Arrival in Madrid on June 18)

Option 3: 8-week session: May 31 (arrival in Bilbao on June 1) through July 22, 2027. This is a combination of the 3 and 5 week programs.

Final Balance will be invoiced directly to students based on accommodation selection

NOTE: Three separate payments will be made to total the program fee.

  • 3-week program: $480

• 2) UD-CIDE Tuition & Fees (including application fee) – students will be invoiced directly based on program selection. Payment will be made online via their university portal
• 3) Room & Board paid to housing provider (Vivir Bilbao) – students will be invoiced directly based on their housing selection. Payment will be made via bank wire

Use the Make a Standard Payment button below to pay your deposit and regular program balance payment. Use the Make a Flexible Payment option to pay an alternate amount (such as additional insurance or payment in a different amount as a result of a scholarship award).

Online payees have the choice of either credit card or eCheck (ACH) payment. ACH transactions will be charged a flat fee of $0.50 per transaction. All credit card payments will incur a 2.95% service fee. For credit card payments, a minimum convenience fee of $3.00 will be applied to transactions over $20.00 and under $102.00.

Students can avoid fees by paying in person at the UMW Cashier’s office by cash or check (made out to “UMW”). The Cashier’s office is located on the 2nd floor of Lee Hall.

Option 1: 3-week program, 3 credits. Students will take UMW’s Dr. Surupa Gupta‘s Food Politics course (3 credits) to transfer back to UMW.

Option 2: 5-week program, 3-6 credits. Students will select up to two 3-credit courses to transfer back to UMW.

Option 3: 8-week program, 6-9 credits. Students will take Dr. Surupa Gupta’s Food Politics 3-credit course and add up to two 3-credit courses offered by the University of Deusto to transfer back to UMW for a total of 6 to 9 credits.

Students will participate in the Global Studies and Spanish program at the University of Deusto.  Visit the Deusto catalog for course options. All students will complete the UMW Study Abroad Course Approval Form before departure and must receive a grade of “C” or above for the credit to transfer to UMW.

UMW in Spain participants can also satisfy their Beyond the Classroom or Diverse and Global Perspectives general education requirement by contract with the Faculty Director.

Students may choose between family stays and lodging such as LIVENSA or in the Universidad de Deusto residence hall (Colegio Mayor Deusto). Family stays include a single room, Wi-Fi, three daily meals, laundry, bed linens, and towels. Residence halls provide individual bathrooms, three daily meals (except for LIVENSA, where students have access to a kitchenette), bed linens, towels, laundry facilities, a library, a study room, a TV room, a computer lab, and a gym. Free Wi-Fi is also available.

Accommodations in the residence hall cost an estimated $900 more than the family stay and are not included in the advertised program fee.

The University of Deusto will send instructions for payment to each student registered in the program regarding accommodation and tuition/program fee payments.

Students must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA in order to participate. Students with a GPA less than 2.75 will require a letter of recommendation from a professor as part of their application. Spanish proficiency is recommended but not required. This program is open to all UMW students regardless of major; UMW students must have completed 12 or more UMW course credits. As per UMW credit transfer policies, a C grade or above is required for courses taught abroad to transfer back to UMW. The program is also open to non-UMW students.

An application to CIDE is required via the summer program website. Final submission deadline is May 1, 2027 (€100 non-refundable application fee applies. This application fee is part of the program fees).

• Personal health costs (ex., vaccination fees, COVID-19 testing, etc.)
• Independent sightseeing and entrance fees
• Textbooks

This program requires a moderate to high level of activity, including significant city walking and lengthy hours.

International travel may require immunizations or preventative medicines. Please refer to the US Center for Disease Control’s Traveler’s Health Information Page for recommendations. The UMW Health Center provides free travel consultations by appointment, as well as travel information for UMW students. The Center for International Education recommends that each student have a personalized medical consultation prior to international travel.
