If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.
As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.”

UMW Approved Internships
UMW students have a wide variety of options for internships abroad. The programs listed below have been selected because they offer summer international internship experiences with options to earn transfer credits.
All Other International Internships
At UMW, we encourage students to explore international internships that align with their personal and professional goals—even if they find opportunities outside of our listed programs. If you secure an international internship through your own connections, you’ll need to decide if and how you want your experience to count toward your academic progress at UMW.
You have four options for how your internship can be recognized:
Students who secure an international internship through a university or study abroad provider may be eligible to receive transfer credit. Like traditional study abroad courses, internships can count toward your academic progress, provided they meet specific criteria. The internship must be graded (not pass/fail), and credits must be assigned by the host institution or program. The final grade will appear on the official transcript from the international university or provider, but it will not affect your UMW GPA. However, only credits will transfer if you earn a C or better.
For students already planning to study abroad for a summer, semester, or year, completing an internship during that time can be a great way to gain professional experience while earning transfer credit. To receive credit, students must complete the standard Study Abroad Course Approval Form before starting their internship.
Students who wish to receive UMW credit for an international internship can do so by working directly with the Center for Career and Professional Development. Unlike transfer credit, internships approved for UMW credit will have the grade included in your UMW GPA. To begin the process, students should download the Academic Internship Contract and determine their eligibility for academic credit. This option allows students to integrate professional experience abroad into their academic journey while earning credit that directly impacts their UMW transcript.
Students can use their international internship to fulfill the Beyond the Classroom (BTC) or Diverse and Global Perspectives (DGP) (Experiential Learning) general education requirement without earning UMW credit. To do so, students must select a faculty sponsor and submit a completed BTC/DGP General Education Contract to the Center for International Education PRIOR to departure for the international internship. Upon returning to UMW, students will need to complete a reflective component focused on their experience abroad, and a Satisfactory (SA) or Unsatisfactory (UN) grade will be awarded. A satisfactory grade will result in the course SAGE 000 being added to the student’s record, officially fulfilling the requirement. However, this contract cannot be used during a student’s final term at UMW, so students should plan accordingly.
Students can gain valuable international experience through an internship abroad without pursuing academic credit. Even without credit, an internship can enhance a resume and showcase global professional experience. The Center for Career and Professional Development offers support in creating or updating resumes to highlight international internships effectively.
Students choosing this option must still register with the Center for International Education (CIE) and meet with an advisor to ensure all required documentation is on file with the university before departing.
Once you have selected your internship program:
- Register for an International Internship during your selected term. You will receive a confirmation email upon successful registration.
- Apply to the internship provider or international company for whom you’d like to intern.
- Enroll in comprehensive international medical insurance through the CIE if your internship does not provide insurance coverage. Send us your dates of travel and the cities/countries on your itinerary and we’ll get you signed up and charge the expense to your student account.
- Submit your emergency contact information.
- Attend a Pre-Departure Orientation and complete all required documents for international travel. Contact CIE to arrange the orientation or if you have further questions or concerns.
- Pay your Education Abroad Fee. $20/week or $300/semester will be billed to your student account.
