Immerse yourself in another culture and expand your academic horizons by studying abroad as an exchange student. UMW offers 11 tuition-neutral Exchange Programs, allowing students to spend a semester or academic year abroad with our academic partners in Azerbaijan, Germany, Italy, France, England, Japan, the Czech Republic, China, and Hong Kong. Through these programs, students pay their regular in-state or out-of-state tuition to UMW, while all other associated fees (such as room and board) are paid directly to the international institution, with the exception of Lingnan University and Northwest University, where students will pay UMW tuition and UMW housing rates for these programs. Additionally, students from our partner institutions travel to UMW for a semester abroad, fostering a dynamic and enriching exchange of cultures and ideas.
Students must receive a nomination from the Center for International Education (CIE) to participate in an exchange program. Beginning with fall 2025 programs, students will be required to pay the UMW Education Abroad Fee ($300 per semester) prior to receiving a nomination. This fee supports the extensive coordination involved in facilitating these opportunities, including maintaining strong institutional partnerships, securing placements, and ensuring a seamless transition for students studying abroad. Because exchange placements are limited, last-minute withdrawals create logistical challenges and prevent other students from benefiting from these unique academic experiences. The fee is refundable until the nomination deadline for each exchange program; after this deadline, withdrawals will result in forfeiture of the fee.
For more details on available exchange programs and nomination deadlines, please explore the collapsible sections below.
