International Perspectives on Leadership and Service
Leadership and service take various forms and are affected by many things including culture, economic opportunity and governmental structures. Join Dr. David Rettinger and Sarah Dewees on a program this winter break, using Nepal as a case study and applying what you learn in class to the current environment and society in Nepal. You will get to experience the beauty of this unique country through:
- Walking tours of Kathmandu and the medieval city of Bhaktapur
- Service projects impacting the local community
- Visits to local schools, universities, and governmental agencies
- Traditional meals, arts and entertainment
- Tours to Boudhanath, Pashupatinath and Swayambhunath Temples, and both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the mountains of Pharping

International travel may require immunizations or preventative medicines. Please refer to the US Center for Disease Control’s Traveler’s Health Information Page for recommendations. The UMW Health Center provides free travel consultations by appointment, as well as travel information for UMW students. The Center for International Education recommends that each student have a personalized medical consultation prior to international travel.
This program includes moderate hiking through uneven terrain and significant walking.
Accommodations
Students will stay in double occupancy rooms in a comfortable local guest house and hotels. Breakfast is provided and Wifi access is included at all locations.
Coursework
In addition to the program travel during Winter Break, students will enroll in the Fall 2019 course IDIS 350V for 3 credits. The course will meet weekly for the last 8 weeks of the fall semester in preparation for the trip to Nepal.
This course satisfies the Beyond the Classroom OR Diverse and Global Perspectives general education requirement by contract with the Faculty Director only.
Requirements & Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course. Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA in order to participate. This program is open to all UMW students regardless of major or year of study. It is also open to non-UMW students but enrollment in IDIS 350V for the Fall 2022 semester is required.

Online payees have the choice of either credit card or eCheck (ACH) payment. ACH transactions will be charged a flat fee of $0.50 per transaction. All credit card payments will incur a 2.85% service fee. For credit card payments, a minimum convenience fee of $3.00 will be applied to transactions over $20.00 and under $106.00.
