Health Information

International travel may require immunizations or preventative medicines. Please refer to the US Center for Disease Control’s Traveler’s Health Information Page for recommendations. The UMW Health Center provides free travel consultations by appointment, as well as travel information for UMW students. The Center for International Education recommends that each student have a personalized medical consultation prior to international travel.

This program requires significant amounts of walking daily.

Spend your spring break touring the Great White North with Dr. Scott Powers. Students will experience French-Canadian culture and French language immersion. This program visits two of Canada’s principle cities, with guided tours of Montréal and Québec City.

  • Experience an orientation tour of Montréal, with a panoramic overview of the city from atop Mount Royal, followed by a welcome dinner
  • Visit the Montréal BioDome, home to exhibits on biodiversity
  • Tour the historic Montréal Basilica of Notre Dame
  • Attend a French theatre performance at Duceppe Theatre and an Improvisation show at the Théâtre Sainte Catherine
  • Gaze at the Northern Lights at Montréal’s Planétarium
  • Enjoy several fine-dining 4-course meals at award-wining restaurants serving French and Québécois cuisine
  • Attend a Drag Show at Québec City’s legendary “Le drague”
  • Explore Montréal’s underground archaeological digs at the Archaeology Museum
  • Take part in a VIP Tour of the Parliament Building in Québec City
  • Embark on a three-hour train ride with panoramic views of the Québec countryside and Saint Laurence River
  • Explore RÉSO, downtown Montréal’s unique “underground city,” one of the largest underground complexes in the world
  • Tour Québec City with views of the scenic Château Frontenac and the Royal Battery, the drill hall of the National Battlefields Park
  • Participate in a lantern-lit Ghost Tour of Old Québec
  • Experience a tour of Le Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, highlighting works by Québécois artists
  • Enjoy a local hockey game


All accommodations are triple occupancy in three-star hotels.


This is a non-credit-bearing program. However, students will:

  • Experience French language immersion environment in Fracophone Québec.
  • Discover fascinating French-Canadian history and culture through guided tours.
  • Visit a local university and converse with French-speaking students.

This course satisfies either the Global Inquiry OR Experiential Learning general education requirement by contract with the faculty director. The contract must be filed with the Registrar’s Office prior to departure.

Requirements & Prerequisites

FREN 201 is a required pre- or co-requisite to participation in the program. Students currently enrolled in FREN 102 may also participate with permission from Dr. Powers.  Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. This program is open to all UMW students regardless of major or year of study. The program is also open to non-UMW students upon approval by the faculty director.


Faculty-Led Program Scholarships are available to UMW students (deadlines apply).
