Spend your summer in London, England with Dr. Janine Davis of the College of Education, in partnership with London South Bank University (LSBU). Gain an international perspective on education while seeing the breathtaking sights of this historic city:

  • Visit the world-famous London Eye and Big Ben clock tower on the banks of the River Thames.
  • Explore the remarkable British Museum, which was founded in 1753 and features a collection of over 8 million items.
  • Take a day-trip to Stonehenge.
  • Stroll through London’s breathtaking palaces and treat yourself to the sights of Westminster Abbey.

Accommodations

Students will stay in single-occupancy rooms at the London South Bank University Halls of Residence. LSBU is located in central London and is walking distance to many of London’s attractions (such as the Tower Bridge and the Globe Theater). Accommodations include private bathrooms and a shared kitchen. Internet is provided.

A partial meal plan is included for students at the Campus Kitchen in the London Road Building. The meal plan consists of £4 vouchers for breakfast and £6 vouchers for lunch. Dinner is not included.

Coursework

Students will earn 6 transfer credits for two 3-credit courses at London South Bank University: Instructional Design and Assessment, taught by UMW’s Dr. Janine Davis, as well as your choice of an additional 3-credit course at LSBU. Coursework for Dr. Davis’s class will focus on:

  • Learning the best practices of instruction, including instructional models, assessment, and differentiation for a wide variety of subjects, settings, and levels.
  • Supporting students’ understanding of curriculum and instruction beyond the U.S. approach to education.
  • Professional visits and guest lectures on  the U.K. educational system, equality and diversity in education, the French and Dutch systems, and Special Schools.

Credits earned for the 3-credit “Instructional Design and Assessment” can fulfill equivalency requirements with the 4-credit course EDUC 351. However, to complete the remaining 1 credit hour, students MUST also enroll in EDUC 471 for a 1-credit practicum in the fall semester following this summer program. For students who do not enroll in EDUC 471 following the program, only elective credit will be given for this course.

This course satisfies the Experiential Learning OR Global Inquiry general education requirement by contract with the professor only.
